First European Youth Day press conference

“Optimism in times of crisis” – this is the message that the youth of the New Apostolic Church wish to broadcast from 21.-24. May 2009 in Düsseldorf, reported District Apostle Armin Brinkmann at the first press conference of the European Youth Day. Representatives of religious and Christian media gathered on 5. March on the premises of the Congress Centre at the Düsseldorf Messe (exhibition centre) to become informed about the youth gathering.

Not only could the New Apostolic Christians look forward to the European Youth Day, but also, too, the citizens of the city of Düsseldorf. This was the message from District Apostle Brinkmann. “You will encounter young, happy people over this extended holiday weekend, in many places of the city – not simply here at the exhibition centre - who will be gleaming with this distinctive orange coloured cross displayed somewhere on themselves – the logo of the European Youth Day. Whether on bags or t-shirts, I promise you, these young Christians will stand out.”

Starting with a statement

District Apostle Brinkmann opened the press conference with a statement, in which he explained to the media delegates the reason for convening such a Youth Day and introduced the goal with which the church is connected.

With the European Youth Day, the New Apostolic Church wants to show the youth, “We take you seriously; you are part of this church; you also shape it.” Then, the future belongs to the youth.

Just eleven weeks until the European Youth Day

There are just over 70 days only until the European Youth Day. “For us, as planners, these are weeks of highest activity”, continued the District Apostle in his statement; and further, “But for me personally, it is already a time of joyful anticipation and tense expectancy. We will realise a, until now, unique form of social experience and thereby learn much from it, which will be of utmost value for the church.”

The media delegates were most warmly invited to accompany this new way for the organisation of the New Apostolic Church, then one thing is clear: “The European Youth Day is a territory of new dimensions.”

Key data presented

Following the statement of District Apostle Armin Brinkmann, Apostle Franz-Wilhelm Otten, business manager of the EJT 2009 Düsseldorf gGmbH, gave a presentation on the key data of the European Youth Day: 35,000 participants from all over Europe, costs of ten million Euros (of which 1.8 million alone for catering and a total of 300,000 meals), 2,000 musical participants, 1,500 helpers, etc.

The majority of contributions to the European Youth Day will be prepared, presented and contested by the youth. One of the young organisers is Mitja Rose, who is one of the people responsible for the presentation of the musical evening on Friday, the “Night of lights”. He reported on the planning and preparations and announced a diversified musical programme by various groups – in the styles of jazz to classical. Added to this will be numerous show pieces.
A fascinating challenge for the Messe

Finally, Hilmar Guckert, spokesman for the management of the Düsseldorf Congress, outlined the challenge which the European Youth Day will give to the Messe: this multi-national major event provides the company with new logistical and organisational challenges, “Many Christian communities from all over Europe will be following the Youth Day in May 2009. That is a great challenge which we look forward to and for which we will be absolutely committed,” said the spokesman.

Several of the media delegates then presented the hosts of the press conference with questions concerning the European Youth Day. So came the question, as to why the New Apostolic Church wanted to break new territory with the European Youth Day. District Apostle Brinkmann referred here to the wish of many of the youth to experience, for once, such a major youth event. This was an understandable request in this age of globalisation.

Questions about workshops and music

More questions were raised on the subjects of the planned workshops and platform discussions, the music on the European Youth Day, invited guests from the world of politics, churches and business and on the finances of the event.
